Check Out My Top 5 Denim DIYs

Great news for slow fashion fans - upcycled denim is quickly becoming the fashion industry's new hot topic, seen in the success of cult designer brand Vetements' deconstructed jeans and Cheap Monday's new C/O capsule collection, which is re-fashioned out of pre-existing garments. As denim is one of the most water-intensive fabrics to produce, upcycling items you already own into something new is one of the most sustainable ways of updating your wardrobe, as well as being creative and budget friendly. Check out my favourite denim DIYs below, from three bloggers who've made upcycling into a successful career, with over 750K Instagram followers between them.

With a talent for endlessly innovative upcycling ideas that are always on trend, Geneva Vanderzeil of A Pair & A Spare has been inspiring hundreds of thousands of readers to get creative since 2008. This denim DIY is an simplified take on the Vetements originals for a fraction of the price, and a great way of learning how your clothing is put together if you're new to sewing.

2. DIY Denim Embroidery | @apairandaspare
Also from the A Pair & A Spare archives, this DIY taps into the embroidery trend that's currently everywhere with a unique, personalised twist. Based out of her Hong Kong studio, Geneva road tests both sewing by hand and using a machine, so you get an idea of what each method looks like. The time needed for this DIY will depend on how experienced you are, but with only a needle and thread required it's one of the simplest projects to execute and something you can really get creative with.

Popular for their fun and colourful style, sisters Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess cover everything from fashion to food and interiors, with a large section on DIY and general crafting. This project showcases a simpler type of embroidery, which takes less time but still makes a big statement. If you're feeling inspired, don't forget to join in with the ABM Instagram community and share your projects using the hashtag #ABMcrafty (now totalling a staggering 142K posts).

4. DIY Drop Pocket Jeans | @honestlywtf
You might already know Honestly WTF as an unconventional mix of art, photography, editorial and home d├ęcor, but editor Erica Chan Coffman also has some beautifully styled DIY projects up her sleeve - check out her take on deconstructed denim below, which is perfect if you've got an old pair of stonewashed jeans hanging around.

5. DIY Denim Embroidery | @honestlywtf
There's a big selection of upcycled denim projects on Erica's blog, but my favourite project has to be her DIY embroidery, which has a kind of typography feel to it. As well as lots of colourful and artistic enbroidery inspiration, she also includes some great tips and tricks to make the process easier (such as using fabric stabiliser and embroidery hoops) and an easy-to-follow explanation of a simple chain stitch which is perfect for beginners.
